Chapter 8

Pierce

Tonya visibly relaxes when I say we don’t have to go inside and I once again want to gut those who’ve taken this woman and not only made her doubt her worth but made her think she has to perform actions she’d rather not.

“The complex has a little garden in between the four buildings, if you’d like to check it out?'” I offer.

Tonya smiles, “I’d like that.”

We get out of the car, and I lace my fingers with hers. "We can either go through the lobby or we can go the long way and walk around. Which would you prefer?”

“It’s a beautiful night and I’d like to stay outside please.”

I lean down and kiss her temple. “As you wish.”

“Is there a way to tell who’s a wolf and who's not?” Tonya asks as we make our way to the back side of the large building.

“Not really, Just like a normal human, we come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We tend to identify each other by scent. Why do you ask?”

“The guy on the other side of us. I was wondering about him. He was staring at Mom pretty hard. Guess I’m trying to ask if he’s a creeper or not.”

I chuckle. “He’s actually a relative of my mother. Distant cousin or something. He keeps to himself, but he’s not a bad man. He has earned a reputation for being… uh… let’s just say he’s rough around the edges.”

“Please elaborate.”

“Well, as you saw, his face hasn’t been acquainted with a razor since the seventies. He works part time as a bouncer at a pretty rough bar just outside the city limits. Plus, I think his motorcycle’s… uh, nevermind.”

Tonya cuts her eyes at me. “His bike spreads as many legs as he does?”

“Something like that,” I hesitantly reply, not sure how to explain a male wolf’s need to be wild when he has yet to meet his mate.

“Well, she won’t settle for being just some fling.” She stops and turns me to look at her. “He was staring at her the way Robbie stares at Angel. Is she his mate? Do I need to be worried?”

“I don’t know if they’re fated mates or not. I can talk to him if you want.”

Tonya laughs ironically as we start walking again. “And tell him what? Mom’s freshly divorced and she’s not one to put up with some domineering jackhole, especially after she kicked the last one to the curb?” She shakes her head. “Nope. If he wants… whatever it is… with her, he’s got to earn it.”

I laugh as I imagine my tough as nails ‘uncle’ having Beverly Belfast put him in his place with the same attitude she displayed as she wrangled my siblings.

“Oh wow,” Tonya breathes when we get to the garden. “Not a fan?” she chuckles when I merely shrug.

“I prefer nature to be a little less…” I wave my arm, indicating the square corners and evenly spaced flowers.

“Do you go to the mountains much?” she asks, taking a seat on one of the concrete benches.
