Chapter 8
Pierce
Tonya visibly relaxes when I say we donât have to go inside and I once again want to gut those whoâve taken this woman and not only made her doubt her worth but made her think she has to perform actions sheâd rather not.
âThe complex has a little garden in between the four buildings, if youâd like to check it out?'â I offer.
Tonya smiles, âIâd like that.â
We get out of the car, and I lace my fingers with hers. "We can either go through the lobby or we can go the long way and walk around. Which would you prefer?â
âItâs a beautiful night and Iâd like to stay outside please.â
I lean down and kiss her temple. âAs you wish.â
âIs there a way to tell whoâs a wolf and who's not?â Tonya asks as we make our way to the back side of the large building.
âNot really, Just like a normal human, we come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We tend to identify each other by scent. Why do you ask?â
âThe guy on the other side of us. I was wondering about him. He was staring at Mom pretty hard. Guess Iâm trying to ask if heâs a creeper or not.â
I chuckle. âHeâs actually a relative of my mother. Distant cousin or something. He keeps to himself, but heâs not a bad man. He has earned a reputation for being⦠uh⦠letâs just say heâs rough around the edges.â
âPlease elaborate.â
âWell, as you saw, his face hasnât been acquainted with a razor since the seventies. He works part time as a bouncer at a pretty rough bar just outside the city limits. Plus, I think his motorcycleâs⦠uh, nevermind.â
Tonya cuts her eyes at me. âHis bike spreads as many legs as he does?â
âSomething like that,â I hesitantly reply, not sure how to explain a male wolfâs need to be wild when he has yet to meet his mate.
âWell, she wonât settle for being just some fling.â She stops and turns me to look at her. âHe was staring at her the way Robbie stares at Angel. Is she his mate? Do I need to be worried?â
âI donât know if theyâre fated mates or not. I can talk to him if you want.â
Tonya laughs ironically as we start walking again. âAnd tell him what? Momâs freshly divorced and sheâs not one to put up with some domineering jackhole, especially after she kicked the last one to the curb?â She shakes her head. âNope. If he wants⦠whatever it is⦠with her, heâs got to earn it.â
I laugh as I imagine my tough as nails âuncleâ having Beverly Belfast put him in his place with the same attitude she displayed as she wrangled my siblings.
âOh wow,â Tonya breathes when we get to the garden. âNot a fan?â she chuckles when I merely shrug.
âI prefer nature to be a little lessâ¦â I wave my arm, indicating the square corners and evenly spaced flowers.
âDo you go to the mountains much?â she asks, taking a seat on one of the concrete benches.
